The Importance of D&C 25
Section 25 of Doctrine and Covenants is important because it reveals the equality God has for both his daughters and sons. Emma Smith, an elect lady, was called by the Lord, to be an aid and comforter to her husband. These included serving him as a scribe, murmuring not against him, and give him support and love during his afflictions. She was also called by the Lord to expound scripture, exhort the church, write, and to make a selection of hymns. It is important to recognize that during the Prophet and Emma Smith’s time, women were the ones who had to do the laborious work in the house and be a full-time mother and wife; they were restricted to write, participate in voting, and even from obtaining an education. In this passage, the Lord has established the worth and value of a woman, Emma Smith, to be more than just a wife and mother; a woman to be entitled to learn, write, and be an “actor” in her life. Although some people today may say that the Prophet still had the major part while Emma wrote only hymns, her calling was just as equal and important to that of the Joseph. Hymns are sacred prayers that are sung to the Lord. “For my sold delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads”- D&C 25:12. In this verse, the Lord speaks of the way he feels whenever we praise him during hymn singing. Our hymns contain the doctrines of the church, the principles that we learn, including the atonement of our Savior. Primary children learn the gospel through hymns and singing. This fulfills the Lord’s revelation of Emma expounding scripture; she is able to do this in making hymns. I never thought of it this way till now that Emma was equalized to Oliver Cowdery, who served as the prophet’s scribe. I have a deeper view of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Relief Society was organized as well, just like the priesthood was restored. The legacy of womanhood trying to be more than just a mother traces back to this revelation, given by Lord. This is a further testimony to be of the love God has for each and one us and it fulfills his promise that everyone is the same in His sight. It is ironic to point out that the first woman to serve as mayor was Mormon. Furthermore, the Lord specifically state at the end of this section that he speaks unto all. . This has given a greater motivation to prepare myself without worrying about boundaries. I feel especially blessed to live in this generation, where there is much progression and development in every category of learning. Were it not for this section, there wouldn’t be a change in the world’s view about equality, and women would be constrained of participating in learning and more.
